Mount Ipsario, standing at 1,204 meters, is the highest peak on Thassos island—and like many island summits, it offers stunning panoramic views. From the top, you can see Kavala and Keramoti, the Athos Peninsula, and the islands of Lemnos and Samothraki. The mountain can be reached either on foot or by bike.

Our plan was to bike all the way up to the highest point on Thassos—Ipsario. Based on tips from locals, we decided to take the paved road to Theologos first, the island’s former capital. From there, we would head up a dirt road toward the summit.

After enjoying the waterfalls near Theologos, the real climb began on the rugged path up to the peak. The route was generally pleasant and 100% rideable. With just a few short breaks, we made it to the last 3 kilometers before the summit, where our trail merged with another dirt road coming from the village of Maries—also used by jeeps that drive almost to the top. We took a longer break there to regroup our scattered team

From that junction to the summit, we rode nearly non-stop. Just below the peak, a viewpoint opened up, and I couldn't resist parking my bike for a quick photo. At the very top, we were treated to an epic view—directly below us lay the beach of Skala Potamia. Naturally, we lined up for a group photo at the summit. What was fascinating was the strong, cold wind just below the peak, while at the very top it was still, sunny, and pleasantly warm. We sat down to rest, had a bite to eat, and lounged around soaking up the sun.

Time was ticking, and it was time for the descent back to the sea. Our group split again—some went down via Maries, and the rest of us took the route through Kastro. I wouldn’t recommend climbing via Kastro to anyone: although it’s paved, the road to the village is extremely steep. If we’d tried going up that way, we would’ve really struggled. We finally made it back to Limenaria a little after 5 in the afternoon.
